Medical Care Course

Advanced Medical Training for Responsible Shipboard Personnel

The Medical Care course prepares designated seafarers to manage illnesses and injuries onboard when immediate shore-based medical assistance is unavailable. It develops advanced competence in examining patients, providing treatment, managing medical emergencies and coordinating with shore-based medical professionals.

The programme is structured with reference to STCW Regulation VI/4, Section A-VI/4-2 of the STCW Code and applicable maritime medical-care requirements.

What Is the Medical Care Course?

Ships may operate far from hospitals for extended periods. A suitably trained person must therefore be capable of providing ongoing medical care until the patient can be transferred or professional assistance becomes available.

This course goes beyond basic first aid. It covers patient assessment, treatment, medicine administration, medical-record management, infection control and emergency decision-making at sea.
